Should I use the NHS or go private?

One of the first steps you should take if you think you may have autism is to speak with your GP. Your GP may complete a screening test with you, and if you meet the criteria for a full assessment, they will refer you to the appropriate NHS autism diagnostic service.

However, there are often long waiting lists on the NHS due to high demand. If you would prefer to get an assessment as soon as possible, you can explore the option of a private assessment, which is equally as valid and important as an NHS one.

We are a private assessment provider, and you will receive a full diagnostic report at the end of the process to help you access additional care and support.

The Assessment Process:

As our service is a diagnostic service, we cannot provide support with treatment, medication and care following a diagnosis. However, you can get in touch with your local NHS service or another private provider if you need this support and we can help support you with this.

As we offer an independent service, you will need to pay to access our diagnostic service. We offer flexible payments plans to help you spread the cost. Please ask us for more information when you enquire.

Our Other Services

A cognitive assessment, like the WAIS-5 (Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale), helps you learn how your brain works. It shows how you solve problems, process information, and remember things.

Whether you want to understand how conditions like autism or ADHD affect your thinking, or just learn more about yourself, this assessment helps you see your strengths and areas to improve. This knowledge can help you do better in school, work, and everyday life.

Why have a Cognitive Assessment?

  • Learn about yourself: After the test, you’ll get a report showing what you’re good at and what you might find tricky. It also gives tips to help you succeed.
  • Get the support you need: You can share the results with teachers or employers to get help and tools to do your best.
  • Grow and improve: Knowing how your brain works helps you find ways to handle challenges and live a better, happier life.

Autism Anglia are pleased to be taking expressions of interest for people interested in a cognitive assessment. You can register your interest and a member of our team will get in touch.

Frequently Asked Questions About Cognitive Assessments

What is a Cognitive Assessment?

A cognitive assessment looks at how your brain works. It helps you understand how you think, solve problems, and remember things.

Anyone can take a cognitive assessment—children, teenagers, or adults. It’s for people who want to learn more about how they think and learn or to get extra help if they need it.

You might take a cognitive assessment if:

  • You find school or work tasks hard and want to know why.
  • You want to learn about your strengths and challenges.
  • You want to get support for conditions like autism or ADHD.
  • You are curious about how your brain works.

You will do activities like solving puzzles, answering questions, and remembering things. These activities help measure how you think and learn.

No, you can’t fail. The test isn’t about getting high scores; it’s about learning how your brain works.

The results show what you’re good at and what you might find tricky. They also include tips to help you with learning, working, or managing daily life.

Yes, after the assessment you will receive a report with personalised advice and tips to help you with your specific needs.

Yes, you can show the results to your teachers, parents, or employer so they can help you get the support you need.

The test doesn’t give a diagnosis, but it can help as part of the assessment process if a specialist is diagnosing autism, ADHD, or other conditions.

We offer speech and language therapy assessments (SLA) for young people aged 4-21 years old.

Our service is for children and young people who have speech, language, or communication needs. It is suitable for people who haven’t had an SLT assessment in the last 12 months.

The assessment will be done by one of our specialist Speech and Language Therapists at our diagnostic centre in Colchester, Essex. It will look at different areas of speech, language, and communication.

After the assessment, we will provide a detailed written report including recommendations for support at home and school.

A key step in understanding

An assessment is a key step in supporting and understanding a young person’s communication needs.

The assessment can:

  • find out what is hard for them
  • Help with schoolwork and learning
  • Build confidence
  • Give an action plan for support
  • Check how they are developing
  • Help you to share information with teachers, doctors and other professionals

Getting started

Before the assessment, we will ask you to fill out a form about the child’s history and share any reports you already have. We may also talk to teachers or other professionals if needed.

The assessment appointment will take about 90 minutes. Depending on the child’s age and needs, we may use different methods to assess them. Our therapists aim to make the process calm and enjoyable.

After the assessment

After the assessment appointment, we will write a detailed report. This report will include advice for school and home, as well as useful resources to help.

Please note: We only provide assessments and cannot offer speech and language therapy sessions to help with the needs identified. However, you can arrange a follow-up meeting online (via MS Teams) for us to discuss the findings with the school. This will be charged for separately.

Cost: The fee for the assessment and report is £270.

Frequently Asked Questions About Speech and Language Assessments

What is a speech and language assessment?

A speech and language assessment (SLA) is an assessment carried out by a specialist to understand how a child or young person communicates. It looks at different areas, such as understanding speaking, listening and social communications skills.

A person may need an assessment if they have difficulty pronouncing words clearly, struggle to understand instructions or questions, find it hard to express themselves or find the right words, have trouble with social communication, such as making eye contact or taking turns in conversations.

The assessment usually takes around 90 minutes. This may vary depending on the child or young person’s needs.

You’ll receive a detailed written report which will explain the findings, give recommdations for support at home and in school, and suggest next steps.

The assessment identifies if speech therapy is needed. However, our service doesn’t provide therapy services. We can help you identify services in your area.

“The report was very detailed and written just for me. It made me feel so much more confident.”
